Message from the Rabbi
Rabbi Judy Cohen-Rosenberg
In the midst
of our Jubilee Celebration, it is time for me to prepare for summer
vacation. Before vacation
starts, I want to thank everyone who helped make this unique Temple year
a success. All of our
programs, long term and short term, make us the vibrant congregation
that we are: your work as members of the CRT Board, committees,
auxiliary arms, and in other volunteer positions helped that to occur.
Special thanks to Sharon Kotcher and the Executive Board for
bringing new perspectives to their tasks.
Mentioning names
is always a perilous proposition.
I am bound to omit someone.
However, I want to highlight the work of two committees whose chair
people will be retiring this year.
Special thanks go to Sheila Rosenberg for so ably guiding the Ritual
Committee and to Barry Pelofsky for putting the FUN in the Fundraising
program here at CRT. Your work
is appreciated and I know it will be continued under new leadership.
These committees help us to maintain our mission as the proponent of
Torah and Reform Judaism for the greater Westbury community.
New this year is
the position of Cantorial Soloist. Rachel Pasternak lends us her heart and
soul as well as her gorgeous voice whenever she leads us in worship. Thank
you for everything.
As ever, it has
been a pleasure to work alongside a dedicated and able professional staff.
Bob Stein, Marcia Levy, Andrea Grass and Paul Conti work so hard on
behalf of CRT. I’m glad to be
on their team!
CRT is open
throughout July and August. I
will be away from the office in July and will return on August 1. Have a
wonderful summer.
Rabbi Judy

A Message from the President
Sharon Kotcher
An official Happy 50th to CRT.
Our 50th Jubilee Journal Dinner Dance was a smashing
success – raising needed funds for CRT while celebrating with current
members, former members and some local political representatives.
Our honorees for the evening were our founding members of CRT – what
a joy to be able to celebrate 50 years of CRT with them.
A wonderful evening was spent with cocktails in the Atrium and dinner
and dancing in the Social Hall.
Our newly decorated Social Hall looked
beautiful decked out in beautiful linens and our brand new banquet
chairs. Del Mir, one of our preferred caterers, catered the event.
Many thanks to Ann Middleman and her committee-Sheila Rosenberg, Ira
Warshawsky, Art Kleiner, Bonnie Siegel, Pat Tulchin and the many others who
helped to make the evening a success.
Thanks also to Gary Hudes and Jeanie Corn for designing a beautiful
commemorative gold pin marking the occasion.
Gary Hudes provided a pin to every person who attended.
One of the highlights of the evening was a musical slide show video
containing hundreds of pictures provided by our members.
The video really captured every generation of CRT.
A big thank you to Danny Kotcher for putting it together.
Anybody who wants to purchase a copy of this DVD for $10.00 can order
one-just call Ann Middleman or leave a note for her in the temple office.
All proceeds go to CRT.
Speaking of events held at CRT, Spring and Summer party
season is in fill swing. There
may be times when our wonderful caretaker, Paul Conte, may not be available
to be at CRT for all these occasions.
If you are interested in filling in, please let Art Kleiner know.
The only thing you really need to do is to be there as a
representative of CRT-no cleaning necessary!
This is an excellent way of helping CRT with its fundraising efforts.
Our next Congregation Meeting is June 11th at
7:30 PM. We hope
that many members will be in attendance as we are voting on two very
important items-the proposed slate of officers for 2008 – 2009 and the
proposed budget. Thanks to
Bonnie Siegel and Bill Egelman for chairing the Nominating and Budget
Committees respectively. Come on down and have a voice in the future of CRT.
Speaking of the future of CRT, we will have a new
President in a few weeks. I am
confident that he will continue on a course that sustains CRT for the next
50 years. As for me, a few
thank-you’s are in order. To
Rabbi Judy, a huge thank you for being the caring, concerned and insightful
person that you are. Most
members don’t know this but, in addition to all of her other duties this
year, Rabbi Judy jumped in to give all of the b’nai mitzvot their lessons
this year. Thank you Rachel
Pasternak, soloist extraordinaire.
You are a beautiful person with a beautiful voice-don't know what we
would do without you.
To Andrea Grass and Paul Conti, what more can I say than
you two make the place run.
However, you both go so far above and beyond the call of duty-your
dedication to CRT is amazing.
To Bob Stein, the most pleasant man I have ever worked with.
Bob not only administers our religious school in the most efficient
and effective way humanly possible, but he continues to step up to the
plate, year after year, to take on new challenges at CRT.
Susan Praga, Ed Temple and Paul Teller, we asked and we
got - you helped to sustain CRT through all of your wonderful events.
Thank you for your enthusiastic leadership-you guys are the tops.
We have so many wonderful committee heads, they are too
many to mention. However, I do
want to say a special thank you to Sheila Rosenberg who will be stepping
down as chair of the Ritual Committee and Barry Pelofsky who will be
stepping down from Fundraising.
Sheila has done this huge job so seamlessly that nobody even realizes the
work that goes into it. Barry
performed the impossible this year, raising more money than ever before and,
as always, working tirelessly for CRT.
Thank you, thank you for all of your efforts.
To the Executive Board, you folks are the best.
Thank you for all of your support this year.
In particular, to Ann, Harry and Jeff-there wasn't a time that I
happened by CRT in this past year when one (usually all) of you weren’t
busy at work on a project or problem.
You are the workhorses, no actually the thoroughbreds, of CRT.
My thanks wouldn't be complete without thanking my
husband and my children. I
don't think that they realized, when I agreed to be President of CRT, that
they had all become deputized in addition.
They have performed clerical work, served on committees and have
carted and lugged stuff for CRT.
They never said no to any of my requests for their involvement.
I couldn't have done it without them.
And finally, a thank you to Robin Woodrow who,
unknowingly, sucked me in to CRT involvement more than a decade ago when she
challenged me to teach a Sunday School class in exchange for getting the
preferred Sunday School time slot for my son.
It worked, CRT got another teacher.
But what I got was much more valuable-a CRT family.
A family that never turns away when you need their help-a generous
and caring family.
Thanks everyone.
Sharon

Fundraising News
Well, summer is nearly upon us, so I guess that I can get
some rest after going through all of the letters that you have sent me all year.
I hope that these two letters will hold you until the next edition of
Chayeinu in September.
Dear Barry:
I know that you sell gift cards to a lot of great
restaurants including TGI Friday’s The Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s, Red Lobster
and Ruby Tuesday, but my family really loves Chinese food.
I was just wondering; do you sell gift cards to any Chinese restaurants
in our area?
Sincerely,
Cookie from Hicksville
Dear Cookie:
You must have ESP, because I am pleased to announce that beginning this week, I
will be selling gift cards to P.F. Chang’s China Bistro located in the nearby
“Source Mall” on Old Country Road.
I am very excited to add this very popular restaurant to the many others
that we offer. I think that this
could be a big hit with our congregation.
In fact, if sales go really well we could make a fortune, Cookie!
Dear Barry:
I know that the temple year will be over at the end of June, but I have a good
idea for a fundraising event.
Last year, I went to an evening of horse racing that my friend’s organization
sponsored as a fundraiser. I think
that it would be a lot of fun and it could make a lot of money for the temple.
What do you think about it?
Sincerely,
Win, Place or Show in Levittown
Dear Win, Place or Show:
I think that your idea is interesting, but it will be difficult getting
the horses down the stairs and in to the Social Hall. I don’t even want to think
about the clean-up afterwards.
However, I invite you as well as all members of the congregation to our next
meeting to present your fundraising ideas before the 2008-09 temple calendar is
set on June 26th.
The next Fundraising Meeting will be held at 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 5th.

To All CRT Members and Friends:
This year CRT embarked on raising funds by promoting our newly renovated Social
Hall and Atrium. We are proud to report success in having our facilities
utilized more; based on comments from people who have used CRT and our preferred
caterers, we believe this will continue. However, as members, we should
all think of holding our special events at CRT first, especially since members
receive discounts off the already very reasonable rates.
Spring will be here soon; remember, CRT is an excellent venue for your
graduation parties, Sweet 16's, birthday parties and any other life cycle event.
Our Atrium can hold upwards of 75 people and the Social Hall 160. And
using one of our preferred caterers has its benefits too.
Call or e-mail us and let CRT host your upcoming events. You'll be
doing yourself a favor by knowing exactly what you are getting, and also will be
helping out CRT.
Thank you.

School News……
May will end the school year with a flurry of activity,
befitting the previous 9 months.
On May 4th, the children of K/1/2 will again participate
in the Muscular Dystrophy Association Hop-A-Thon. They will hop for
two minutes at 11 AM on May 4th. Last year one of our
kindergarten children hopped 100 times in the 2-minute period. The
children are asking friends, parents, and relatives to support them by
making a donation to MDA. Come on down on the 4th to witness this fun
and worthwhile event.
On May 11th, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders will honor
Israel's 60th birthday by reading "Dirah
Lehaskir - Apartment for Rent," a poem by Israeli poet/author Lea Goldberg.
The children will then discuss the poem's message of acceptance and
tolerance and follow up with an appropriate activity.
On the final day of classes, May 18th, the Social Action
Committee will have the annual
Mitzvah Mall in school
with Israeli charities exclusively in recognition of Israel's
60th birthday.
And May will see one final Parent/Student Learning session
in each class. Be sure to spend the morning in your child's class on
the designated day.
Although the last day of classes is May 18th, there is one
further school activity. We hope all children and their families will
attend the Israeli Day Parade in
New York City on June 1st with CRT and the
East Meadow
community. If you haven't yet signed up, please contact Rabbi Judy
right away. Thank you.

Preschool News
Our caterpillars have arrived! Every day we watched as the
caterpillars changed as they slowly turned into butterflies. The whole process
took about 3 weeks and then we all went outside and let the butterflies fly
away. It's a very special science unit; teaching about the metamorphosis of
caterpillars into butterflies, the taking care of and feeding of animals and
letting them be free to live in nature.
Bonnie's class took a field trip to
Lido Beach and Marian's class went to the
children's museum. As an end of year trip, both classes saw the Big Apple Circus
in Eisenhower
Park and stayed for an
afternoon picnic with their moms.
It's graduation time! Everyone enjoys the 4 yr old class
graduation party at CRT preschool. All classes are invited to attend, and each
class performs a special song for those gathered. As might be expected, there
are cameras flashing, tears flowing, and lots of hugging & eating. Each family
contributes fruit to make a "multicultural fruit salad", a blending of many
fruit flavors to make a delicious whole. The highlight of the morning is the
graduation procession, with students in dad's white shirts and handmade
graduation caps.
Registration for our camp and fall programs is doing very
nicely. If you know any families with preschool age children, please tell them
about us. We have lots of flyers that could be posted or handed out. If you're
willing to take a few to help us, please see Marcia, Bob, or Andrea. We're
looking for used bikes in good condition. We need big wheels, hot cycles
etc.( no baby bikes). We also need some outside plastic table/bench sets, and a
few outside benches for teachers to sit on. If you're at a garage sale and see
them, please buy them for us and we'll be happy to reimburse you. GOOD CONDITION
ONLY PLEASE!
We thank everyone who helped make this year a success -
especially our teachers Sandy, Peggy, Marian and Bonnie. They are an
incomparable team! Thank you to the School Board, Rabbi Judy, Andrea & Paul for
your help & support.
A special thanks to the many parents who were so helpful in
many different ways and for bringing us your wonderful children to love and
cherish.
Have a great summer.

MEN'S CLUB NEWS
I was very proud of the Men’s Club Service on April 11th.
Based on the feedback we received from the congregation, it was informative as
well as entertaining. A large percentage of the men participated and handled
their parts admirably, including the Torah readings. The presentations on the
theme of “Tikkun Olam” by Ira, Joel, Howard and Mike were well-written and
thoughtful. And, of course, I got to do both a little sermonizing and yodeling
(not at the same time). I would also like to thank the congregation, which
turned out for the service and lent much spirit. We trust that Mark Levine, to
whom the Men’s Club Service is now dedicated, would have been proud, too.
We hope the congregation will also turn out for the May Men’s Club events. The
annual Mother’s Day Breakfast is on May 11th (can you guess why?),
with our omelet and pancake chefs (Gary and Joel) back by popular demand. The
fundraising Garage Sale is on May 18th, rain or shine. As always, we
need your support to make these events a success.

Jonathan’s on Jericho Turnpike. Cathy Reider will be contacting members to
inform them of their Donor eligibility. We look forward to sharing this evening
with many of our Sisterhood members.
Our Sisterhood Shabbat on May 9th was a wonderful service. I want to
thank everyone who participated and shared their CRT memories. An excellent
service was written by Ann Middleman and enhanced with the writings and readings
from past Sisterhood Presidents.
If you would like to be more involved with the CRT Sisterhood, now is the time
to step forward. Our Nominating Committee extends an invitation to all
Sisterhood members to participate. Please contact Susan Praga @ 334-3203.
